Travelling to Uganda

Best Time to Visit

Uganda has two main dry seasons, which are the best times for travel:
1. June to August and December to February: These months are ideal for gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris due to less vegetation and clear skies, making spotting animals in the national parks easier. It is also the peak season, so expect more visitors and higher prices for accommodations and tours. Booking permits for gorilla trekking well in advance is recommended during this time.

2. March to May and September to November are wet seasons. The scenery is lush and green, and there are fewer tourists, leading to lower rates for lodges and safaris. However, roads can be challenging, and trekking trails might be slippery. This could be a good option if you are on a budget and enjoy fewer crowds.

Tips for Travelers
1. Health Precautions: Make sure to get necessary vaccinations (such as Yellow Fever) and carry anti-malaria medication. Drinking bottled water and maintaining hygiene are crucial.

2. Packing Essentials:
o Bring light, breathable clothing for the daytime, and warmer clothes for the cooler evenings, especially if visiting high-altitude areas like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
o Comfortable hiking shoes are essential for trekking activities.
o Carry a waterproof jacket and gear during the wet season.

3. Do’s:
o Respect Local Customs: Be mindful of cultural norms and always ask for permission before taking photos of people.
o Use a Guide: For safaris and trekking, always use a certified guide for safety and better wildlife viewing experiences.
o Support Local Businesses: Purchase souvenirs from local artisans and dine in local restaurants to support the community.

4. Don’ts:
o Avoid Plastic Bags: Uganda has banned plastic bags, so it’s best to use reusable bags.

o Don’t Engage with Wildlife: Keep a safe distance from wildlife and avoid feeding or touching animals to prevent harm to them and yourself.

Popular Activities
• Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking: The world's best primate tracking experiences can be found in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Kibale Forest. Bookings for permits are necessary and should be made in advance.

• Safari Adventures: There are many of possibilities to see wildlife in national parks like as Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo Valley, and Murchison Falls, including the "Big Five" sightings.

General Advice
Since Uganda's tourism infrastructure is still being developed, it is best to reserve your lodges and permits well in advance, particularly during the peak season when space at prestigious lodges can be scarce.
You may make sure that your trip to Uganda is easy and memorable by making plans based on these suggestions!
